TEXAS, USA — Three members of the San Antonio Police Department have been charged with murder after allegedly shooting and killing Melissa Perez, 46, in her apartment on June 23, 2023. Perez was initially reported for destroying property and cutting wires to an alarm panel. Video footage shows that officers arrived on the scene and identified Perez to be experiencing a mental health crisis. Officers attempted to get her to walk towards their patrol car but she ran back to her apartment and locked the door. After attempting to arrest Perez, officers climbed over the patio railing and opened the window. Perez allegedly picked up a hammer and threw a glass candle at the officers, causing minor injuries to one officer. Perez and the officers communicated through the window and a half-hour later, Perez allegedly smashed a window on the door with the hammer. The officers then opened fire, striking and killing Perez. SAPD Chief William McManus stated that their actions were not consistent with SAPD’s policy training and using deadly force was not reasonable given all the circumstances.
